OBAKE - BRUTAL WHITE

FOR CURIOUS EYES ONLY - CREATIVE COLLECTIVE EXHIBITION : M/FW 2017

Anastasia La Fey was proud to have been invited to exhibit her work as part of Melbourne Fashion Week's Creative Collective Exhibition - FOR CURIOUS EYES ONLY.

Presented by Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, curated by iconic Melbourne stylist Virginia Dowzer and designed (in collaboration with exhibitors)  by MOTH Design's Kate Hannaford, this annual exhibition showcases Melbourne’s innovative, diverse and inspiring independent designers, artists and makers.

Created specifically for this exhibition, and indicative of her increasing movement toward an art-based practice, OBAKE - BRUTAL WHITE is a further investigation, a more dream-like exploration, of La Fey's 2017 BRUTALIST theme. Inspired both by the work of Japanese Brutalist architect Tadao Ando and the ancient Japanese folkloric class of preternatural yōkai, specifically stories of the shapeshifting Obake – literally a thing that changes, referring to a state of transformation, and the ephemeral snow woman Yuki-Onna.

Weaving together these seemingly incompatible influences Anastasia La Fey created two "inhabitable sculptures" - an installation & performance-based investigation of cloth that is starkly architectural and yet remains both beautifully organic and otherworldly.

With sound design by Michele Vescio and exhibition opening performance by Benjamin Hancock & James Andrews
